Star Wars: The Old Republic has been quietly tumultuous since its inception in 2011, but cross-play issues haven't really surfaced until now. The pseudo-sequel MMO to Knights of the Old Republic is, after all, PC only. But now SWTOR is on Steam. This is a leap over almost a decade, but it's a welcome change for anyone who wants to put the game together in one place. The question is whether SWTOR crossplay allows for progress and multiplayer between the new and old versions. That is what we are here to answer!

Here's everything you need to know about SWTOR and crossplay, and what new players should expect.

Does SWTOR have crossplay?
The simple and happy answer is yes! The Steam version of SWTOR "has full cross-play and cross-save directly with the SWTOR launcher, so no matter which way the player logs in, all progress will carry over." It may seem obvious, but you'll be surprised at the number of games that players can't interact with between stores.

Not surprisingly, Steam players get some special goodies. SWTOR, like all other games, gets trading cards on the Steam Marketplace. Additionally, according to the press release, there is a new "profile background and emoji" and "100 Steam achievements will be added in a future update." Also, don't worry when you play. If you're worried about those things, people will "retrospectively reward all achievements previously unlocked in SWTOR on Steam."

Sounds like a win-win situation for everyone involved! If you've been waiting for SWTOR on Steam for nine years, or just remembered the game exists, there's an excuse to give it a try. Meanwhile, veteran players can see an injection of fans flying across the galaxy.

You can find a full breakdown of STWOR's crossplay announcement here. To be sure, modern games are free. However, for $15 a month, you can take advantage of expansion packs like last year's Onslaught addon and other very useful additions. Cartel Coins (premium gaming currency) are also available on Steam.
