The popular alpha playtest for the hardcore multiplayer dungeon-crawler Dark and Darker has been extended in response to a last-minute request by players for more time. Dark and Darker's latest playtest has seen an incredibly rise in players, largely because of Twitch's most popular streamers taking playing the game. This is an opportunity that developer Ironmace Games wants to fully profit from even if that means keeping servers up and running until the weekend of Christmas.
Ironmace has launched its latest playtest, which was its third overall test, to test Dark and Darker on December 16. The original plan was to host a one-week beta test of the fantasy Tarkov-like experience, which focuses on several important new features, including the High-Roller dungeon queues that are now available as well as new map tiles an online shop for cosmetics, and major balance adjustments overall. The test is strictly invitation-only but Ironmace has been inviting players at the moment of their request. The result is astounding growth in followers and players on Steam.
Discussion about extending the playtest is brewing since the beginning of Dark and Darker's latest playtest with PC gamers due to initial issues with the server. However, as the date of December 23rd drew closer, the discussion moved away towards recompenses for the time wasted and towards leveraging the massive surge of interest. Ironmace finally agreed, and delivered the promise that it would offer "MORE darkness" in addition to confirming a 3 day extension of Dark and Darker alpha playtest. Dark and Darker alpha playtest. The playtest will end on this Monday, December 26 at around 6:00 AM.
The reason behind the playtest extension is due to "early problems with the network, instability and rollback issues." Ironmace claims the reason for this as a common practice at the moment, because previous Dark and Darker tests were plagued by similar issues as well as extensions. The main message is that there is the excitement about Dark and Darker's escalating popularity as well as Ironmace even sharing the numbers of players through social media.
Ironmace is addressing the current situation as well. The playtest has been running for over a week, and Ironmace has issued six hotfixes that address issues and making enhancements. The most recent Dark and Darker hotfix arrived on Friday, strengthening the Skeleton Champion, Wraith Skeleton Champion as well as Centaur foes, nerfing their Longbow and adding the map tile The Colosseum that could appear within the queue for High-Roller.
Dark and Darker remains planned to be released as a premium title in the late 2023. One year is a long time to waitfor, however, Ironmace is sure to keep running tests between now and the time of release. Three Dark and Darker testing sessions during the last four months, and each was scheduled as the last one concluded. We can expect Ironmace to provide more details about what's to come for the dungeon crawler that is hardcore when the playtest is over the 26th of December. It's hoped that the team will take the time off to recuperate as well.
